How do you build a starship hundreds of metres across and load it full of aliens on a budget of only 30 million dollars? Very economically. Vancouver's own Image Engine is coming to the Empire Theatre on Tuesday, September 29 to give us an inside look at building and animating aliens in Neill Blomkamp's stellar feature film directorial debut, District 9.

Vancouver has been a major centre of the Sci-Fi universe for decades now, with high quality productions such as the X-Files, Battlestar Gallactica and the many incarnations of Stargate having all been filmed here — but until now only a few of these shows have posted their effects in Vancouver, and almost none of the feature films shot here make use of our local VFX facilities. Image Engine is helping to turn that ship around, having completed over 300 shots for this summer blockbuster, a film shot in South Africa, but with huge portions of the VFX work being done on the flats of South False Creek.

Please join us and a large audience of your peers as 5 key staff who helped make this project a huge success present their work and share their experiences. Doors open at 6 pm and the panel starts at 7 pm.

Rossland Mountain Film Fest Teams Up With World-Renowned Shooter Derek Frankowski

Saturday, November 22nd from 10am to 1pm at The Rock Cut Restaurant/Pub

For more information and to register check out www.rosslandfilmfest.com or call Brian @ 250 231 1642

Originally hailing from the flatlands of Regina, famed action sports photographer Derek Frankowski has built much of his career around mountain biking in the Kootenays.

A graduate of the SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) photography program, Frankowski found his way to Rossland over five years ago and has since established himself as a solid and frequent contributor to the action sports industry; from snapping images for Fox, Red Bull, Oakley and other major players, to gaining recognition for the area through his work with up and comers and established riders alike, Frankowski credits much of his success to continued learning, developing new techniques, and an ability to navigate the potential pitfalls involved in the photo industry.

In the spirit of constant progression, the Rossland Mountain Film Festival is pleased to announce that it has engaged Derek to host and present a three-hour workshop in which he will demystify ‘breaking into’ the industry, how best to identify and develop a market, and how to improve one’s own photography.

The workshop, scheduled for Saturday, November 22nd from 10am to 1pm at The Rock Cut Restaurant/Pub, will provide participants an opportunity to tap into Derek’s considerable knowledge and experience.  From anecdotal stories, to firsthand insider tips, invaluable information will be shared with all hobbyists, recreational shooters, and committed photo/film buffs in attendance.

Drawing on his work with National Geographic Adventure, Outside Magazine, and numerous other publications, Frankowski is confident he is up to the challenge and is excited at the possibilities teaching represents, stating that, “Mentoring has been a huge help to my career.  I’ve been lucky to work with a lot of great people.”

Workshop attendees will learn and be able to ask questions about various technical aspects of photographic work, how to develop a strategic approach to promoting oneself, and making the transition from still photography to film-work; a recent convert to digital filmmaking, Frankowski will speak to the parallels, the differences, and the challenges that both photographic and film work present.  Analog, digital, and what may come next will all be up for discussion, as will the significance and usefulness of the Internet and information technology as they relate to film and photography.

As an additional bonus (and in keeping with the film focus of the RMFF) Frankowski will also be showing a clip from his latest film project Lifecycles, an HD film production shot in large part with the coveted Red One digital cinema camera (the camera, too, is also rumoured to be in attendance).

Intended as a practical guide and an inspirational introduction (or refresher) for aspiring photographers/filmmakers, the workshop size is limited, so organizers recommend registering early.  The workshop cost is $25.00. For more information and to register check out www.rosslandfilmfest.com or call Brian @ 250 231 1642.
